Frequently Asked Questions

How should I store my honey?

To maintain its quality, honey should be stored at temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius and kept away from direct heat and sunlight.

Is your honey raw?

Can a diabetic eat honey?

If you have diabetes, its important to seek personalized advice from your doctor, dietitian, or diabetes consultant regarding the consumption of honey.

Why does honey crystallize?

Honey is a naturally concentrated sugar, comprising over 70% sugars (primarily fructose and glucose) and less than 20% water. Crystallization occurs when the water in honey contains more sugars than it can dissolve. The balance between fructose and glucose plays a key role in this process, as the proportion of each sugar influences the speed at which crystals form and move throughout the liquid. Crystallization is a natural phenomenon and indicates that your honey is pure and unprocessed. In fact, if your honey remains liquid, it may be a sign that it has been pasteurized (over heated) or processed, which can diminish its flavour and natural benefits. See more on crystallized honey here.

Does honey expire?

If stored properly, honey does not spoil. Its remarkable longevity is attributed to its high sugar content and low moisture levels. However, we do label a Best Before date of five years from bottling to comply with export regulations.

Do you import honey?

No! All our honey comes from our own hives, expertly managed by our beekeepers right here in Tasmania.

Yes, honey is made by bees from the nectar of flowers, a plant-based substance that does not contain gluten.

Do you use chemicals to treat your bee hives?

No. Tasmania is fortunate to be an island, which allows us to effectively manage the introduction of diseases through Bio Security measures at the border. As a result, there is no necessity to treat our hives.

What makes your Leatherwood honey unique?

Our Leatherwood honey is sourced from the Eucryphia lucida tree, which exclusively grows on the West Coast of Tasmania, making it rare. This region is known for having some of the cleanest air in the world, as winds from the Southern Ocean help to reduce local pollution. The Tarkine and Southwest areas, where the Leatherwood tree flourishes, are largely untouched wilderness, preserving a piece of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. Access to this pristine land is limited to regulated land management practices and selected Tasmanian Beekeepers.
